SC&C Fred Coon CEOFred Coon and Bill Temple recently spoke with Ziprecruiter about the recruiting profession. Written by Matt Krumrie, the article titled, “Career Tips for Recruiters: How Those Who Hire Get Hired,” focused on how recruiters and HR professionals help others advance their careers, but when it comes time for these individuals take their careers to the next level, they often shortchange themselves.

Fred was quoted, “There is not much difference between how a recruiter or HR professional moves ahead in their career than any other job seeker.” As a recruiter, apply the same strategies and advice you would give for a marketing director or engineer to advance their careers. Use the skills you’ve learned and taught to get in front of the hiring manager, communicate often with a hiring company, and make sure your job search materials (resume, cover letter, WebFolio, video resume) are exceptional and tailored to each business you apply to.

As a recruiter or HR professional, you must showcase your special talents by demonstrating your ability to hire and retain high quality candidates for a position. You must demonstrate to a company that as a recruiter or HR professional, you’ll save the organization money and time by filling vacant positions with the right candidates who are qualified and experienced to be successful in the jobs. Less turnover and reduce training times mean more revenue for the company’s bottom line.

SC&C Bill Temple Executive Client ConsultantBill suggests focusing your industry specialty in order to move ahead as a recruiter. Focus on a particular sector or industry, for example, IT, marketing, finances/banking. “Generalists don’t do well,” Bill was quoted as saying.

Another benefit of being a sector specialist is your list of contacts, Bill added to the specialization advice. As a major recruiter in a particular segment, you’ll know who the senior-level candidates are that can readily fulfill an open position. Demonstrate how your list of contacts can benefit the company that you want to work for.

Fred also states that any job seeker needs to be an active member of social media, especially LinkedIn. He suggests expanding your connections every day, “Today, it’s all about reaching out.” Use list of client contacts to see who may work for a company that is hiring recruiters and HR staff.

The recruiting profession is like any other. You have to show your value add to an organization, and you can advance your career to the next level.
